His campaign announcement, carried by the Elizabethton Star, says he built nine companies, earned seven patents, and created 750 Tennessee jobs, and that he founded a hot tub manufacturer operating a 740,000 square foot plant in East Tennessee. Why they are running
On his campaign site Hatley says: “I'm not running because politics called me. I'm running because Tennessee gave me everything, and I'm not willing to sit on the sidelines any longer.” In his announcement he said: “The best leadership often doesn't come from the political class. It comes from the people who build businesses, create jobs, and understand what it takes to keep our state growing and strong,” adding that Tennessee deserves “a governor who knows what it takes to meet a payroll, face a crisis, and come out the other side standing.”

Where they stand on education
Education is one of five priorities on Hatley's campaign site. He cites the share of Tennessee fourth graders reading at grade level and proposes placing expert reading coaches in the state's 100 lowest-performing elementary schools, pointing to Mississippi's improvement in reading results as the model. In his announcement he also called for trade education, apprenticeships, and skills training so students are not sent “into debt chasing a four-year degree,” and said he supports investing in public schools and raising teacher pay.
