The Tennessee Department of Education has appointed Jonathan Criswell, Director of the Milan Special School District (MSSD), as the department’s new Chief Program Officer (CPO), effective later this summer.¶
According to a department news release, Criswell will oversee key programming efforts, including data collection for evaluations, school improvement initiatives, and federal programs. Education Commissioner Lizzette Reynolds expressed confidence in Criswell’s ability to drive state efforts to improve student performance and college and career readiness.¶
“Jonathan Criswell’s leadership at Milan Special School District has led to strong opportunities to accelerate student achievement and outcomes, and we are thrilled to add his wealth of knowledge and expertise to our department leadership team,” Reynolds said. “He is a passionate educator who will bring years of experience and an important perspective to help us set students up for future success.”¶
Criswell began his career in education as a computer and business education teacher before becoming the assistant principal at Ridgemont Elementary School in Union City Schools. During his tenure, he evaluated teachers and developed a school improvement plan. He later became principal of Trenton Elementary, where he led a teacher-driven plan to boost student achievement. After nearly two decades in various roles, Criswell was appointed director of schools for MSSD in 2016.¶
Under his leadership, MSSD saw “transformational academic growth” and participated in initiatives such as the “Innovative School Models” and “Grow Your Own” programs, which provide training for prospective educators. MSSD’s strategic initiatives, including TN ALL Corps, helped the district earn the “Tennessee Best for All District” distinction in 2022. Criswell also developed a robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) program in Milan.¶
