Three new public charter schools took different paths to serve families in Rutherford County
Rutherford Collegiate Prep opened its doors for the first time to students last Wednesday while American Classical Academy Rutherford and Springs Empower Academy are both opening today.

Members of the Rutherford County School Board voted 4 to 3 Wednesday night to reject what would’ve been the county’s fourth public charter school. Financial concerns ended up playing a bigger role in the close decision against Novus SMART Academy (K-8) than academics.
Springs Empower Academy to open at a temporary location in the fall while its permanent school is under construction
Springs Empower Academy announced a partnership with the Smyrna Boys & Girls Club to provide a temporary location while the K-5 public charter school’s permanent facility is under construction.The school is currently in the process of building a new school on Enon Springs Road, but construction and financing delays are preventing that facility from being ready in time for students to start in the 2024/2025 school year.

Their daughter is currently thriving in a self-paced Montessori model at kindergarten and Empower Academy would offer the option of continuing that in a Montessori-aligned approach.“What really drew us to Montessori to begin with was the individual teaching and catering the education to the individual rather than teaching one way to the group,” said Scott Mitchell.
Springs Empower Academy releases renderings of Rutherford County's new public charter school
Springs Empower Academy students now have a picture of what their future school will look like.School leaders unveiled renderings Monday for the new K-8 public charter school that will open in fall of 2024 and serve up to 480 students in Smyrna. Rutherford County School Board members approved the K-8 public charter school last year and Springs Empower Academy is now in the process of purchasing land on Enon Springs road to build the school.
