John Overton junior selected to serve on Metro Nashville school board

Members of the Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) Board of Education chose John Overton High School rising junior Hannah Nguyen to serve as one of two student board members.

The board’s selection committee reviewed applications from students across the district and interviewed five finalists before determining Nguyen was the best fit to represent all MNPS students.

“Following a rigorous selection process involving current school board members and community representatives, the selection committee unanimously agreed that Hannah would be the ideal fit for the role,” said board member and selection committee member Cheryl Mayes. “This decision was grounded in her exceptional qualifications and her strong commitment to developing policies that positively impact all MNPS students. Moreover, Hannah’s unique cultural background positions her as an excellent advocate for underserved students. She is dedicated to representing the experiences of all students, especially those from immigrant families.”

Nguyen is involved in a number of extracurricular activities at her school including volleyball (coaching and playing), Debate Club, and Beta Club. Nguyen is also an award-winning delegate of Youth in Government.

Student members of the board of education serve two-year terms and hold non-voting positions, but weigh-in on decisions during meeting discussions.

“I am honored and elated to join the board as your junior Student Board Member,” Nguyen said. “I look forward to bringing my unique perspective and making student voice not just heard but valued.”

Nguyen joins current student member Christine Tran, a rising senior from James Lawson High School. Nguyen will serve her term until graduation in 2026.
