Memphis-Shelby County Schools announce a school closure and other changes for the upcoming school year

Memphis-Shelby County Schools announced four important updates,  including one school closure, for students and families in the coming 2023/2024 school year.

The district confirmed that Cummings School will remain closed for the 2023-24 school year for renovations following a collapsed ceiling in the school library. Students and staff at this school will remain at LaRose Elementary as Cummings undergoes work on remodeled bathrooms, a new gymnasium, an updated HVAC system and more.

Shady Grove Early Learning School will open to more than 100 pre-k students at 5360 Shady Grove Road in the upcoming school year. The school will partner with community organizations and businesses to bring family education and developmental learning education, pre-k library resources and a food pantry to all preschool students throughout the district.

Hanley School will transition back to MSCS from the state-run Achievement School District this fall. The school will be part of MSCS’s iZone, which is a group of district-run turnaround schools that offer support staff, additional learning time and several resources for families and classrooms.

Additionally, Mt. Pisgah School will transition back to a middle school at the start of the 2024-25 school year. Current ninth graders will receive support in transition to an alternate MSCS high school with consideration given for priority placement. Current eighth graders are welcome to stay at Mt. Pisgah for an additional year, but the district will provide assistance for those wanting to transfer to a different high school for the upcoming year.
