New Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) Superintendent Dr. Marie Feagins is planning to listen to a diverse set of voices as she charts the path forward for the state’s largest school district.
Last week Feagins announced the transition team that will help craft and execute the district’s next strategic plan and over the weekend she joined the co-chairs of that team at a retreat involving education leaders from across the country.
Metro Nashville Public Schools Director Dr. Adrienne Battle and former Orange County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Barbara Jenkins were among the presenters at the retreat led by the Council of the Great City Schools (CGCS), which is a coalition of the nation’s largest urban public schools.
The group is providing support during Feagins’ transition.
“These great leaders have so much knowledge and wisdom to share,” said Dr. Feagins. “They have been in the trenches. They know the work, and the fact that they traveled here to support Memphis-Shelby County Schools and me means we are off to a very good start.”
Dr. Marie Feagins officially took over the reins of Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) on April 1. School board members chose the former Detroit Public Schools Chief of Leadership and High School over three finalists in February following a long, two-year search.
Feagins’ transition team includes more than sixty local, state, and national advisors with a deep knowledge of K-12 education, the Memphis community, and the district as a whole.
“It is important for me to hit the ground running and see results fast where possible,” said Dr. Feagins. “I know my vision is strong and will yield positive outcomes. But the ‘how’ is equally important to the ‘what.’ These seasoned educators, students, and community and business leaders will share their journeys and provide sharp recommendations for solutions.”
Dr. Feagins to seek student advice
Superintendent Feagins also announced a 103-student transition team called “Legacy Builders” that will amplify student voices and ensure the district’s plans and initiatives directly address the needs of the student population.
The Legacy Builders includes students from a wide range of grade levels, backgrounds, and experiences identified by school leaders for their commitment to improving their schools and communities.
District leaders believe the inclusion of this student transition team will bring fresh perspectives and bold ideas. The students will work closely with Dr. Feagins to help shape the district’s strategic plan.
“Students are at the heart of everything we do, and it is crucial that their voices are heard and their needs are met,” said Dr. Feagins. “By including 103 students on the transition team, we are making an inspiring commitment to student leadership and input as the foundation for the success of our district.”
