The Tennessee State Board of Education unanimously approved 400 schools from across the state as Reward schools for the 2022/2023 school year at a meeting Friday afternoon.
The Tennessee Department of Education designates schools with the Reward school status when they demonstrate high levels of performance and/or growth. It’s considered to be the highest designation for a school.
Thirty-Eight percent of the 2022/2023 Reward schools come from the state’s seven largest school districts and of those, Williamson County Schools has the highest percentage. More than half of Williamson County Schools are on the Reward school list followed by Rutherford County Schools at nearly 40 percent.
The state named a third of Knox County Schools as Reward schools with Hamilton County Schools following right behind at 24 percent. More than 12 percent of Metro Nashville Public Schools and more than 11 percent of Clarksville-Montgomery County School System received the designation.
Districts celebrate on social media
Districts across the state celebrated the Reward school announcement on social media.
Rutherford County Schools Director Jimmy Sullivan was among them.
“Beyond proud of the record 20 RCS reward schools for the 22-23 SY!!!” wrote Sullivan on X, formerly known as Twitter.
In Knox County, Shannonale Elementary Assistant Principal Terri Fisher also celebrated her school’s accomplishment. Shannondale is among the 24 schools in Knox County named.
“Great news: Shannondale Elementary has received the “Reward School” designation from @TNedu! This is the state’s highest designation, and recognizes achievement and growth gains for all students and student groups. Congratulations to our amazing teachers, students, and staff!” wrote Fisher.
Much like the prior Reward school announcement, public charter schools are playing an important role in school districts that have them. Fourteen Of the 34 Reward schools in Memphis-Shelby County Schools are public charter schools while Metro Nashville Public Schools has 3 including Rocketship United Academy.
Rocketship Public Schools Tennessee Executive Director William Hill released a statement celebrating the academy’s second time making the Reward school list.
“Receiving the state’s highest recognition for student achievement is a testament to the strength of our school community at Rocketship United Academy. As a Title 1 school and a school with a large English Learner population, Rocketship United is an incredibly diverse school where a majority of our students are economically disadvantaged and students of color. To receive the Reward School designation, our school had to demonstrate the highest level of academic progress for all student subgroups. We are proving that all students have the potential to achieve excellence, no matter where they were born or how much money their parents earn. We are closing opportunity gaps here at Rocketship United. We’re seeing this success because we put a strong emphasis on personalized learning—on meeting our students where they are—and helping them learn more in one school than most students do. We do all of this while also supporting our students’ social and emotional needs and instilling a love of learning in each child,” said Hill.
