Memphis-Shelby County Schools may have gained a new superintendent this month but the district is losing its Chief of Business Operations.
Julius Muse announced his intention to resign at the end of March following the recent passing of his mother.
“In light of my family’s current circumstances, I must redirect my attention to their needs,” said Muse. “I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the growth and success of this remarkable school district.”
Muse has been with MSCS since 2022, supporting construction projects, ground and maintenance needs and renovations across the district. His duties will be supported by the department’s executive leadership team during the transition period.
“We wholeheartedly support his decision and appreciate his work to help improve our operational processes,” said Interim Superintendent Toni Williams. “We have every confidence in his leadership team’s ability to carry the operations work forward during this transition period.”
Muse’s departure comes as the district is working to solve a major facilities challenge.
Last year the district announced the average age of its school buildings was 64 years old. That’s 24 years older than the recommended life span of school buildings nationwide.
